A simple model kinetic equation for inelastic Maxwell particles

چکیده
The model of inelastic Maxwell particles (IMP) allows one to derive some exact results which show the strong influence of inelasticity on the nonequilibrium properties of a granular gas. The aim of this work is to propose a simple model kinetic equation that preserves the most relevant properties of the Boltzmann equation (BE) for IMP and reduces to the BGK kinetic model in the elastic limit. In the proposed kinetic model the collision operator is replaced by a relaxation-time term toward a reference Maxwellian distribution plus a term representing the action of a friction force. It contains three parameters (the relaxation rate, the effective temperature of the reference Maxwellian, and the friction coefficient) which are determined by imposing consistency with basic exact properties of the BE for IMP. As a consequence, the kinetic model reproduces the true shear viscosity and predicts accurate expressions for the transport coefficients associated with the heat flux. The model can be exactly solved for the homogeneous cooling state, the solution exhibiting an algebraic high-energy tail with an exponent in fair agreement with the correct one.

Transport coefficients of d-dimensional inelastic Maxwell models
Due to the mathematical complexity of the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres, a kinetic model has recently been proposed whereby the collision rate (which is proportional to the relative velocity for hard spheres) is replaced by an average velocity-independent value. The resulting inelastic Maxwell model has received a large amount of recent interest, especially in connection with th...
متن کاملOn high energy tails in inelastic gases
We study the formation of high energy tails in a one dimensional kinetic model for granular gases, the so-called Inelastic Maxwell Model. We introduce a timediscretized version of the stochastic process, and show that the original continuous time approach makes the particles have different mean energies. This feature is responsible for the high energy tails in the model. We verify this explanat...

We consider the linear dissipative Boltzmann equation describing inelastic interactions of particles with a fixed background. For the simplified model of Maxwell molecules first, we give a complete spectral analysis, and deduce from it the optimal rate of exponential convergence to equilibrium. Moreover we show the convergence to the heat equation in the diffusive limit and compute explicitely ...

متن کاملTanaka Theorem for Inelastic Maxwell Models
We show that the Euclidean Wasserstein distance is contractive for inelastic homogeneous Boltzmann kinetic equations in the Maxwellian approximation and its associated Kac-like caricature. This property is as a generalization of the Tanaka theorem to inelastic interactions. Even in the elastic classical Boltzmann equation, we give a simpler proof of the Tanaka theorem than the ones in [25, 27]....
